My Story

Rather enjoy 1 great mouthful than 2 lousy ones

In 2001 I started farming free-range ducks and pigs on a small farm in Hopefield supplying some of Cape Town's finest chefs, restaurants and hotels. Over time these chefs asked me to craft better quality meat products than the mass-produced commercial options available to them. So began my journey into crafting charcuterie and specialised meat products.

I would farm and craft products during the week and leave at 4am on Saturdays for Cape Town's original Old Biscuit Mill Market in Woodstock, to satisfy local food lovers who arrived early to fill their baskets. Then called FARM FOOD, with our family Kaylene (Mom), Cade (eldest son) and Steve (Dad) doing duty week in and week out, with Teri (youngest son) mucking in after a stint abroad.

There were two Steve's at the market and I became known by all as Big Steve, a name that has stuck to this day.

Sadly Cade passed after a brave battle in 2012 and we knew that we had to get out of the city to find peace in our hearts. We moved to a farm in Stellenbosch where we have remained and I picked up again with my passion for crafting great food.

Conquering my fear of joining the digital era and online sales, I have now taken the big step and gone live. Thank you for your interest and time, I look forward to providing you with mouthfuls of the best biltong and farm products.

Big Steve has always been synonymous with quality food products, crafted diligently while remaining true to traditional recipes and processes.

That ethos will never change.

Our Logo

As a family, we have always had at least one Jack Russell on the farm at any point in time. Tenacious, feisty, fearless, loving, clever, obstinate and very protective, these little Sergeant Majors are very much part of our lives. They don't believe anything is beyond their capability.

Our son Cade created our logo based on Rusty (one of our Jack Russell's in Hopefield) who would regularly steal a string of sausages and take off.

We share it with pride as our mark of quality and as a constant reminder of him in our hearts.
